Cellist Suji Kim has captivated audiences worldwide as both a performer and dedicated pedagogue. A recipient of numerous honors—including the Outstanding Music Performance Award, Chair’s Special Recognition Award, and the Montclair State University Alumni Association Scholarship Award—Ms. Kim has earned top prizes at the Montclair State University Concerto Competition, Temple University Chamber Music Competition, University of Missouri–Kansas City Scholarship Competition, and the Kei-Myung National Competition.
As a soloist, Ms. Kim has appeared with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra, and Montclair State University Orchestra. Her recital highlights include a Kosciuszko Foundation–sponsored recital in New York City and a fifteen-city recital tour throughout South Korea. She has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, Steinway Hall, the Embassy of Bulgaria, Bergen Performing Arts Center, Seoul Olympic Stadium, Seoul Arts Center, and Sejong Recital Hall, among others.
An accomplished chamber musician, Ms. Kim studied extensively with the Shanghai String Quartet. In 2006, her ensemble, the Montclair String Quartet, won First Prize at the Music and Earth International Competition in Bulgaria, followed by concert engagements in four Bulgarian cities. She is currently a member of Trio Fontēs and regularly appears in chamber music series and festivals throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Her previous chamber affiliations include the Montclair String Quartet, the Alacorde Piano Trio, the Montclair Piano Trio, and the Monticelli Trio.
Ms. Kim is also in demand as an orchestral leader and principal cellist. She performs frequently with organizations including The Little Opera Company of New Jersey, North Jersey Concert Opera, The Baroque Orchestra of North Jersey, Plainfield Symphony, New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, Westchester Chamber Symphony, and the Daegu City Orchestra in South Korea.
Born in Seoul, Korea, into a family of musicians, Ms. Kim began her musical training under the guidance of her parents, Won Kyung Kim and Eun Jae Hahn, both distinguished vocalists and professors at Kei-Myung University.
A full-scholarship recipient at Kei-Myung University, Temple University, and Montclair State University, Ms. Kim earned her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from Kei-Myung University and her Master of Music from Temple University. She also completed the Master of Arts, Professional Studies, and Artist Diploma programs at Montclair State University, where she studied with members of the Shanghai String Quartet. Her principal teachers include Robert Betts, Jeffrey Solow, Chaim Zemach, and Nicholas Tzavaras.
Ms. Kim has served as an adjunct professor at Saint Elizabeth University and as faculty at the Montclair State University Preparatory School and the Judith G. Wharton Music School. She currently serves on the faculty of the Montclair Kimberley Academy.
